Vitamin C
Dr. Wendell Belfield, DVM, the veterinarian that has spent years researching vitamin C (in the sodium ascorbate form) and hip dysplasia and other diseases believes that many of our pets illnesses come from a vitamin C deficiency. Some of these illnesses include arthritis, hip dysplasia, lameness, ruptured discs, spinal myelopathy, viral diseases and skin problems. Others include asthma, cancer, digestive problems and urinary infections to the list.
The primary function of vitamin C is collagen production which binds together connective tissue, muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, blood vessels, skin and bones. Vitamin C is a detoxified a powedul antioxidant and is great for the immune system. It fights viruses and bacteria. It stimulates the production of interferon. It is needed for the formation of red blood cells and of adrenalin which is needed for stress. Stress and toxins are some of the main reasons we and our pets need a lot of extra vitamin C. Both deplete the body of vitamin C as do antibiotics, cortisone, sulfa drugs, cigarette smoke, baking soda, fever and excessive drinking of water.
For general maintenance, give vitamin C once or twice daily. When dealing with specific conditions that need large doses of vitamin C for therapeutic purposes, it is best to give smaller doses of vitamin C more frequently because vitamin C goes through the body in 3-4 hours.
The type of vitamin C used in Dr. Belfield's studies was sodium ascorbate and is the one recommended for pets. (We believe in using the original forms and products that were used in studies, not alternate forms or Knock-offs"). Sodium ascorbate is less acidic and has almost no taste. The more acidic the form of vitamin C is (the lower the ph), the more likely you'll get gastric upsets and diarrhea, especially when giving large, therapeutic doses.

For those of you who want to use an esterified vitamin C product (otherwise known as Ester-C) , we have something better. Vitamin and mineral supplements that are not bonded to proteins do not work as effectively as those that are. Vitamins and minerals in foods and herbs are bonded to proteins which means they are better absorbed, utilized and retained.
